3 Differences Between Pure Silver and Sterling Silver

Silver jewelry is an eternal type of jewelry that never goes out of style. Not only does it look elegant and stunning, but it’s also versatile, and goes with just about any outfit type and color.

But a lot of people have a hard time telling pure silver and sterling silver apart, even though it’s pretty easy to understand the differences.

While pure silver evokes a certain awe, sterling silver doesn’t fall short in any way. In fact, for many people, it holds more value due to its dynamic and versatile nature. We’ve all worn sterling silver jewelry pieces at some point and absolutely rocked them!

1. Composition

Pure silver contains about 99.9 percent natural silver compounds, and a mere 0.1 percent of trace elements. After it’s refined industrially, no further compounds are added to the metal.

Sterling silver, on the other hand, is an “alloy” of silver. It contains a lesser amount of pure silver (92.5 percent), and is mixed with other hard metals (7.5 percent). These include, but are not limited to, copper, zinc, and nickel.

2. Tarnish

The good thing about pure silver is that it doesn’t tarnish and fade over time as there is no metal added to it. It always looks seamless, shiny, and ready-to-wear!

Sterling silver is more prone to tarnishing. This is because it contains alloy metals that are susceptible to oxidation. This makes it extremely important to protect these jewelry pieces and store them safely, so they don’t discolor or fade.

3. Uses

As pure silver is incredibly soft, it makes it difficult for jewelry makers to shape it properly. This is why it is not typically used to create fine and intricate silver jewelry pieces—they would bend or damage easily.

Sterling silver, on the other hand, has a variety of use cases. Not only is it more durable than pure silver, but it can also be easily shaped and used for a number of items. These include jewelry, silverware, coffee sets, silver plated items, and so on.
